"Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua), and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: 'Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word.' Infant Baptism
Baptism is the first Sacrament of Christian Initiation. Baptisms are celebrated on Saturdays after 6:00 pm Mass or on Sundays after 10:30 am Mass. Parents of candidates for Baptism are expected to be registered, participating, contributing members of the parish. First time parents must attend a baptism preparation class before the baptism. Parents are asked to choose someone to serve as a godparent or sponsor for their child. Godparents play a very important role in your child's spiritual life and should serve as a role model of the faith. The Catholic godparent must be at least 16 years old and be mature enough to understand, accept, and carry out the duties of a godparent. Please contact Kim Goedde at (812) 768-6457 or kgoedde@evdio.org if you would like to schedule a baptism. Adult BaptismSee Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) for more information.
Baptismal Preparation ClassesThe baptismal preparation class is for all new parents expecting a baby and is required for baptism. Godparents are welcome to come with the parents. The topic of the class goes beyond just the baptism to Catholic parenting and teaching by example. Our children's faith education begins at birth with parents as the primary teachers. Our parish community can offer support to the parents in many ways throughout their lives, but it is the parents that influence their children the most. The class is held quarterly at 6:30 pm at the Holy Cross parish office.
